About Me

Hello, I'm Tom McCorkill

I'm a native Kansan, raised in the southeast corner of the State. I started life in a small town but later we moved to a farm and that is where I did most of my "growing up".  After high school I attended  Kansas State College at Pittsburg and then the University of Missouri where I graduated.
College was followed by a tour in the United States Air Force where I served as a Communications Officer in Japan, Viet Nam and Korea.
After completing my active duty service I attended the University of Kansas and obtained a Master of Public Administration degree. This took me to New Mexico where I worked in city and county government for several years before moving to California to be budget director for a mid-sized county.
Exhausted from over five years of non-stop work on county budgets I left to start my own business, which I operated for nearly fifteen years.
Health forced me to close the carpet cleaning business and since that time I have worked mostly in the field of education, serving as a regular and substitute teacher as well as in education administration.
During most of these years I had continued to serve in the Air Force Reserve so that I finally retired at the rank of Lt. Colonel.
I was married for twenty-eight years to Donna Grohman. a native of Merced, California and we raised three sons. After that relationship ended I was married for twelve years to Vicki Smith, another California girl. I guess I am just addicted to California Girl's!
I now live in Wichita Falls, Texas where I describe myself as "retired" but I remain active in various activities that interest me. Presently, I am working with a friend as an insurance agent and serving, on a volunteer basis, as Executive Director of the Wichita County Republican Party.

I have several hobbies that I have pursued through the years.
I have been a photographer since high school and have taken many personal and scenic photos through the years. I have also been an active computer user since the days when the personal computer first emerged and have followed the development of the "internet" since its infancy. In recent years I have been a very active genealogist, tracing my families back to the beginning of white settlements in eastern America.
I also do a great deal of reading, mostly fiction in the areas of southwestern history and mystery novels by noted authors.
However, basically I am a "workaholic" who would rather be working than doing about anything else.
Through the years I have traveled whenever possible and have been in every State as well as over a dozen foreign countries.

OK - so it was only a mock-up!

What an Experience!

In September, 2008 I had the privilege of serving as a delegate from Texas to the Republican National Convention in St. Paul, Minnesota.
What an experience it was being in the auditorium where the Republicans nominated Sen. John McCain of Arizona as their Presidential candidate and Gov. Sarah Palin of Alaska as their Vice Presidential candidate. It is a memory I will cherish for the rest of my life.

My favorite movies are westerns and mysteries. I still enjoy watching  the works of Roy Rogers or Gene Autry :

Best memories of watching a movie: Seeing John Wayne in IWO JIMA at a Japanese theater! Also, watching for the first time SOUND OF MUSIC at a Japanese theater.

My musical preferences are classical and jazz, though I do enjoy listening to country western music at certain times.

My favorite television shows today are ones such as the LAW AND ORDER shows, NCIS, and MURDER SHE WROTE. I am an avid viewer of the ENCORE WESTERN channel.

I truly enjoy live theater and will go whenever I can.

I have been a baseball fan since I was about five. I grew up in St. Louis Cardinal country and could give a play by play of virtually any Cardinal game. I still think Harry Carey was the best sportscaster I have ever heard. My most favorite baseball player of all time - Stan Musial, of course!
